Dóttir Studio is the work of UK based artist and maker, Jess King.

She creates small batches and one-of-a-kind ceramics from her home studio in Ashwell, in rural North Hertfordshire.

Pieces are either thrown on the potters wheel or hand-built; using coils and slabs. Her work is highly illustrated, reflecting her earlier career as an illustrator.

Taking inspiration from nature and storytelling, she creates whimsical ceramic curiosities that are embodied with a playful sense of narrative, reminiscent of a childhood memory or favourite storybook.

Jess originally studied MA Illustration at the University of Brighton. Upon graduation, she worked in the world of commercial surface pattern design for many years, but after the birth of her daughter and the life change that brought, she sought a return to her independent art practice and so began ‘Dóttir Studio’.

Jess has studied ceramics at City Lit in London and continues to evolve her art practice through various forms and mediums.

‘Dóttir’ translates as ‘daughter’ in Icelandic. I'm not Icelandic, but it's a special place close to my families heart. I married my husband in Iceland and I started working in clay when my daughter was born not long after, so it felt poignant to name my tiny business after something that means so much to us.
